Telecommunications market sources are convinced that the price reduction is the mobile carrier’s death rattle.

Golan Telecom, the mobile start-up that shook the market last spring with discount service packages, was back at it again yesterday. The company said it was offering unlimited calls and Internet connection for NIS 49 a month to people who sign up between now and election day eve on January 21. The price is valid for the first six months, after which it bumps up to Golan’s regular NIS 99 a month rate.
Mobile carrier Golan Telecom Ltd.has halved the price of its unlimited mobile plan from NIS 99 per month to NIS 49. The discount applies to the carrier’s plan for unlimited calls and SMS, free international calls to 53 countries, and up to 3 gigabytes of Internet access. The discount targets new subscribers who switch from other carriers.
HOT Telecommunication Systems Ltd. (TASE: HOT) mobile carrier unit HOT Mobile Ltd.is expected to reach a 7% market share by 2013 and cross the 500,000 subscribers threshold. If the carrier reaches this target then it will be able to get back a substantial portion of the guarantee for its license that it deposited with the Ministry of Communications, sources at HOT believe.
Growing competition in the mobile telephony market, and the advent of Hot Mobile and Golan Telecom, cut the profits of the three established mobile carriers by 39% in the third quarter, in comparison with the previous quarter. The aggregate profit of Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL), Partner Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTNR; TASE: PTNR) and Pelephone Communications Ltd.was NIS 388 million. The three companies’ aggregate revenue fell by more than NIS 1 billion (21%) to NIS 3.8 billion.
The Antitrust Authority will not allow Bezeq Israeli Telecommunication Co. Ltd. (TASE: BEZQ) to merge with its subsidiary DBS Satellite Services (1998) Ltd.(YES), until after the establishment of the wholesale market, which will allow Bezeq’s competitors to use its infrastructures.
